For Better or Worse: The Five Stickiest Changes to Education Post COVID-19

This session will explore the Five Stickiest Changes to Education brought about by the shutdown of schools caused by the 2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed five “stickiest” changes are the result of generative research conducted by Anna Harrison over a period of four months from December 2020 to March 2021. This first phase of research is being captured in a white paper that is targeted for publication in fall of 2021. The diverse pool of interviewees included teachers, students, administrators, designers, and educational thinkers, disrupters, and service providers from across the globe. Three of the interviewees are featured on this panel which will be moderated by the researcher. The first half of the session will feature the panelists describing in their own words, for better or worse, what they believe are the Five Stickiest Changes to education. The second half of the session will consist of break-out groups facilitated by the researcher and the panelists to envision the next chapter in the story for better. The Five Stickiest Changes are: Learn Anywhere Learn Anytime, Stay Open School Design, To Test or Not to Test, Quality of Life, Personalized Learning.

Quotes from the interviews:

"We shut down very fast. March 13, 2020 was the last time I hugged one of my students. I hugged everyone when they left that day." English Teacher

“When everything is online you don't really get to have the fun experience of learning and it kind of takes away from the part that makes it memorable and interesting.” Middle School Student

“We’re not static, we’re not stuck, we can be whatever we want to be." Global Education Leader

“I think we need to redefine what's the purpose of public education. Yes, to escape poverty or is it to end poverty?” School Superintendent

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the research predicting changes to education caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. Identify how these changes might manifest on a typical school campus.
  3. Synthesize the research data into opportunities on current and future projects.
  4. Integrate the five stickiest changes to identify synergies and overlaps between them.
